The UNM Foundation Announces Velarde Center for Philanthropy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico Foundation announced today the official naming of the Velarde Center for Philanthropy, following approval by the UNM Board of Regents. The new facility, made possible through a $5 million lead gift from UNM alumnus and former UNM Foundation Board Chair Randy Velarde, will serve as a key platform for promoting the culture of philanthropy across The University of New Mexico.

“UNM has been a big part in shaping my life, and I am committed to helping others find that same opportunity,” said Randy Velarde. “The UNM Foundation is central to the continued success of our great University and the Center for Philanthropy will greatly assist in the Foundation’s efforts in developing future generations of UNM leaders who will also give back and drive meaningful change.”

Located at a prominent gateway to campus at the intersection of Yale Boulevard and Lomas Boulevard, the Velarde Center for Philanthropy will house the UNM Foundation’s operations and serve as a vibrant space to celebrate generosity, recognize donors, and connect philanthropy with the university's academic, healthcare, and research missions.

Designed by FBT Architects and built by Bradbury Stamm Construction, the three-story, 28,250-square-foot facility will feature state-of-the-art meeting rooms, flexible event and collaboration spaces, and an inspirational philanthropy hall featuring exhibits and displays dedicated to the impact of giving at UNM. Construction is scheduled to begin this winter, with an expected opening in mid to late summer 2027. The total project cost is estimated at $26 million, with $10.6 million in private gifts already committed.

“The Velarde Center for Philanthropy represents more than a new home for the UNM Foundation. It’s a symbol of our shared belief in what’s possible when we invest in people and the transformational impact to our community, the state of New Mexico, and the world,” said Jeff Todd, President and CEO of the UNM Foundation. “Randy’s passion for UNM along with his vision and leadership helped shape this dynamic project, and his extraordinary gift ensures that the culture of philanthropy and engagement will have a lasting home and physical presence at UNM.”

The center will embody the ‘One University’ vision outlined in UNM 2040: Opportunity Defined, serving as a focal point that reflects the University’s dedication to excellence, innovation, and community.
